он был здесь — he was here
он был рабочим — he was a worker
у него, у них и т. д. есть — he has, they have, etc.
у него вчера было много работы — he had a great deal of work to do yesterday
был сильный ветер — there was a strong wind
быть вынужденным (+ инф.) — be obliged (+ to inf.), have (+ to inf.):
он вынужден был пойти — he was obliged to go, he had to go
быть знакомым — (с кем-л.) know* (smb.), be acquainted (with smb.); (с чем-л.) have a knowledge (of smth.)
быть в пальто — wear* a coat, have a coat on
быть в отсутствии — be absent / away
быть при чём-л. (присутствовать) — be present at / during smth.
быть ни при чём — have nothing to do (with)
он тут ни при чём — he has nothing to do with it
